De Ma Chambre means “From My Room.” I’m Heekyung Nozaki, its founder.

For years in Tokyo, I moved between work, family, deadlines and the next thing to do. The sudden loss of a close friend made me realise how easily I had been putting life off until “someday.” I decided it was time to do something I had long wanted: live abroad with my two children. We moved to the Netherlands, and I began making more room to appreciate the life we were living.

From Europe, I began to see Japan differently, too. The refined, contemporary objects I had known in Japan were much harder to find here. I started De Ma Chambre to share them, choosing each piece for its craftsmanship, its materials and the place it might find in everyday life.

I’m drawn to the small differences that come with making things by hand: a brush mark in lacquer, a tiny bubble in glass, a detail that belongs to one piece alone. No two are exactly alike. I find something reassuring in that. We each have our own character, too.

To me, “my room” is a place to pause, notice how I feel and return to myself. It might be a few minutes with incense, the glow of a candle or a cup held quietly in both hands. These moments may be small, but they are part of the life we make each day.
